Sportsmanship Awards

Since 1946, the Paso Robles Lions Club has been proudly giving the student athletes of PRHS the sportsmanship award. This award is selected by the members of their teams and considered the most prestigious award the athlete can receive.

Some 60-65 student athletes receive this award each year. One athlete from each fall, winter and spring sports is presented a medal on a ribbon at a Lions Club meeting. Coaches, parents and family members are invited to attend. Over the years, several students have received this award more than once and many recipients have advanced in their careers because of the characteristics exhibited from achieving this award.

During the Mid 1920’s, Helen Keller challenged the International Association of Lions Clubs to become the world leader in the prevention of blindness. Since, the Lions are known for working to end preventable blindness. In Paso Robles, the Lions proudly lead the way by assisting in an early intervention program to perform vision screening for all students K-8 in the Paso Robles School District.

For the past 20 years, Dr. Doug Major OD, an optometrist with Optometric Care Associates in Paso Robles has been coordinating the vision-screening program countywide. The Paso Robles Lions Club provides funding and a portable vision trailer for Dr. Major and other doctors and professionals to conduct vision screening every September for more than 2,400 students locally and 17,000 students countywide.

Any child under the age of 18 who requires further eye examination or glasses not covered by SLO county Medi-Cal, Health Families and Sight for Students is eligible to request financial subsistence from the Paso Robles Lions Club. If the request is beyond our local Lions Club capabilities, we refer the patient for free medical or surgical care to the Northern California Lions Eye Foundation.
